In my 3rd episode of the Perfect Flow Podcast I talk with massage therapist Luke McCallum about pain, stress, fascia and how thinking holistically about the body suggest different responses to pains and sensations than you might first think. I have been a client and friend of Luke’s for some time and I find his approach to be very illuminating. His perspective as a runner and sensitivities as a therapist combine to something special. He works in Auckland at Sports Lab, but is currently working his magic in Kenya with 2 of New Zealand tops distance runners.
The main topics we cover are:
- Pain: What is it and why do we feel it?
- Stress: What it is and how it presents from different sources.
- Fascia: The 3D spider web supporting and connecting our muscles, skin and organs.
- Needling and acupuncture: His approach to interacting with our body’s control systems.
- Massage: How we could be doing to much rolling and not enough of other modes of manipulation.
- Flexibility: Range of motion broken down in to R1 and R2 flexibility.
In the intro I explain Perfect Flow and give an overview of the topics covered in this conversation. Feel free to skip the intro and go straight to 6:53.
